Most of the fishing in British Columbia is by gill net or purse seine. This man , mending his net, is a gill-net fisherman.

To save the time-wasting trip back to the cannery, packer boats are sent out to the fleets to pick up the catch. This is a Spring salmon about to be "weighed in" on a packer boat.

When the purse seine is completely brailed out, it is carefully repacked on the turntable, floats on one side, weights on the other, ready for the next set.

Some salmon are caught by trolling. Long lines trailing lures, or spoons, are set from poles extended from the sides of the boat. Spring and coho salmon are often attracted by these lures, and are caught on the hooks concealed in them.

As the name implies, gill nets trap fish by the gills which must open and close constantly if the fish is to live. Caught this way, fish must be removed from the net, or "husked out" by hand.

The gill net, sometimes called a drift net because it is set to drift downstream with the current, is hauled in over a power-driven drum in the stern of the boat.
