13103 thumbnail picture
Very top of sponge in image expn4502. This sponge has been colonized by many small translucent anemones with pink mouth areas. These anemones were not apparent in the previous view demonstrating that the closer one looks in the ocean, the more life forms are apparent.
Hawaii, North Pioneer Ridge 20150815T234828Z
13104 thumbnail picture
The back side of the sponge seen in expn4502 showing the basket star, brittle stars, and a white squat lobster. A variety of small octocorals are seen including chrysogorgid corals, iridogorgid corals, and a small golden gorgonian.

Hawaii, North Maro Ridge 20150816T235647Z
13106 thumbnail picture
A rare occurrence of three large circular sponges growing from the same base stalk. This image is quite striking as the sponges are surrounded by Iridogorgia sp. coral bushes. A large squat lobster is seen at the top of the main coral stalk and numerous hydroids cover the coral stalk.
Hawaii, North Maro Ridge 20150817T000621Z

A large yellow feather star crinoid and numerous cream-colored brittle stars call this thin sponge with hundreds of branches home. This type of sponge usually tapers to a thin upper end as seen in this image.
Hawaii, Gardner Terrace 20150817T202645Z
13111 thumbnail picture
A white sponge attached to the rock surface by strong fibers. The brown "scarring" is sometimes caused by benthic siphonophores anchoring to the sponge.
Hawaii, Gardner Terrace 20150817T204227Z
13112 thumbnail picture
Closeup of the "anchor" lines of what might be a benthic siphonophore. Note the filamentous lines extending out from the brown "scarred" areas.
