14527 thumbnail picture
Sloping area along 450 meter contour along the Kona coast. Numerous corallium corals are seen in this area, both in place and broken pieces in the loose sediment.
Hawaii, Kona Coast 20150830T192416Z
14528 thumbnail picture
White rounded boulder that has apparently rolled downslope to the 450 meter contour line. It has an odd brown covering that may be biological in origin.
Hawaii, Kona Coast 20150830T235141Z
14529 thumbnail picture
A sandy sediment covered area showing ripple marks and areas covered by coarser material. This area is relatively devoid of life.
Hawaii, Kona Coast 20150831T010000Z
14530 thumbnail picture
An odd reddish colored boulder that appears to be a huge clod of dirt. It is residing in a sand and gravel covered area. The boulder has numerous small lifeforms including the small black coral bush on its left side as seen in the image.
Hawaii, Kona Coast 20150831T012623Z
14531 thumbnail picture
Large boulders on an otherwise sand and gravel covered bottom.
Hawaii, Kona Coast 20150831T013121Z
14532 thumbnail picture
A ridge crest covered by loose talus consisting of angular boulders and cobbles. The area was almost completely devoid of life which was unexpected on this dive. Two small sponges and a feather star crinoid can be seen in this image.
Paciric Ocean, McCall Seamount 20150831T210931Z
14533 thumbnail picture
Angular boulders and cobbles and large dead Farrea occa erecta sponges are seen in this image as well as one very large boulder.
Paciric Ocean, McCall Seamount 20150831T211747Z
14534 thumbnail picture
Rare small scale volcanic rock structure. Although field identified as sponge material, a look at expn5933 reveals this small structure to be part of the substrate. Perhaps formed by some form of small scale venting as gas escaped from underlying lava flow.
Paciric Ocean, McCall Seamount 20150831T211855Z
14535 thumbnail picture
Larger structure with which small vents in expn5934 are associated. A dead sponge lies next to the small vent-like structures.
Paciric Ocean, McCall Seamount 20150831T211913Z
14536 thumbnail picture
A field of pillow lavas ending at an abrupt cliff.
Paciric Ocean, McCall Seamount 20150831T214735Z
14537 thumbnail picture
A field of angular boulders, indicating never having been exposed to pounding surf. This area had scant life - a small primnoid coral bush (Narella sp.) and a small stalked sponge are the only living creatures seen in this image.
Paciric Ocean, McCall Seamount 20150831T224603Z
14538 thumbnail picture
A field of angular boulders, indicating never having been exposed to pounding surf. This area had scant life - single bamboo whip coral is all that is seen in this image.
Paciric Ocean, McCall Seamount 20150831T225312Z
14539 thumbnail picture
A rock mass rising above the surrounding area. An orange starfish, a small primnoid coral with brittle star, and a large dead sponge stalk with a few brittle stars are the only life seen in this image.
Paciric Ocean, McCall Seamount 20150831T231815Z
14540 thumbnail picture
A relatively barren area covered with pebbles and cobbles. A few boulders are apparent. An anthomastus coral and hexactellinid sponge are on the right and a red shrimp is seen in the upper left of the image. The misty appearing area was caused by the robotic sampling arm which scooped up some of the pebble and cobble substrate.
Pacific Ocean, Swordfish Seamount 20150901T203927Z
14541 thumbnail picture
Closeup of brown material seen in bottom of image expn5940. Is this material mineral or of biological origin?
Pacific Ocean, Swordfish Seamount 20150902T013146Z

Eels skimming a sand covered area. The ripple patterns indicate a relatively high current regime in the area.
Johnston Atoll area, Southeast 20150918T001226Z
14547 thumbnail picture
Eel swimming over rippled sand bottom.
Johnston Atoll area, Southeast 20150918T001320Z
14548 thumbnail picture
Rippled sand grading into black rock substrate.
Johnston Atoll area, Southeast 20150918T011600Z
14549 thumbnail picture
Apparently a sloping rock surface. It appears that the sand "flows' down this surface to the deeper sand covered area seen in the previous three images. The rock surface appears striated - perhaps the effect of eons of time over which sand flowed down this slope etching out small channels.
Johnston Atoll area, Southeast 20150918T023451Z
