A tsunami time-travel map by Ferdinand Hochstetter published in Petermann's Geographische for the Arica, Peru, earthquake ( 8.5 to 9.0 magnitude) of August 13, 1868. Tsunamis were observed throughout much of the Pacific Ocean for the next two days. Average depths along the travel lines are computed depths (method developed by Superintendent Bache of the USCS in 1855.)

This profile was made as a result of sounding taken on the School-Ship MERCURY, a vessel for training orphan boys and delinquent boys in nautical and oceanographic science. The sounding at 45 W indicated the southern extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge from the Azores.

The "Mickey Mouse Salt Domes" as they were called by Paul Grim of NOAA's EEZ mapping program in 1989. These domes were first surveyed by the NOAA Ship MT. MITCHELL, the largest dome being named Mitchell Dome for the ship. Whiting Dome, named for the NOAA Ship WHITING is the large dome to the NW. These are among the largest salt domes in the Gulf of Mexico.

Computer enhanced multibeam bathymetry map of the northwestern and northern Gulf of Mexico continental shelf and slope. The continental slope surface shows both intraslope basins and higher relief ridges and domes that are expressions of salt masses in the shallow subsurface. Much of this image was from the NOAA EEZ mapping project of 1987-1991.
