Dr. Nathaniel Scholz leads a Northwest Fisheries Science Center team that is conducting groundbreaking research using the zebrafish as a biomedical model to determine the developmental effects of contaminants. Using innovative techniques and state-of-the art DNA tools, Nat's team demonstrated for the first time that the heart was the major target for polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons.

With the recent wave of strong earthquakes in the Pacific and potential tsunamis in the coastal areas, there was much interest in a tsunami's impact on the San Francisco Bay Area.

Marking the nationwide "Bring Your Kid to Work Day,"NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle engaged 35 children of center staff in dozens of hands -on science activities aimed at advancing environmental literacy and greater understanding of their parents' role. Kids learned to dissect fish, run DNA gels , and use tags to count fish.

Marine archaeologists from NOAA and the state of Alaska conducted a survey in May of the wreck of the former U.S. Coast Survey Steamer Hassler, built in 1871 for the Coast Survey and named for its first superintendent. Diver Hans van Tilburg, NOAA maritime archaeologist, explores the wreck site.

After months of planning Seattle's NOAA 200th celebration event, the "Get to know NOAA Weekend" was held in June in conjunction with the "Treasures of NOAA's Ark" exhibit at the Pacific Science Center in conjunction with the "Treasures of NOAA's Ark" exhibit. NOAA NWS, NOAA Corps, NMFS, NOS, OAR/PMEL offices, and Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary were represented.

NOAA celebrated June 8th as "World Ocean Day" and California's first "Thank You Ocean Day" by bringing 1,200 4th and 5th graders to Dockweiler Beach. Many of these students had never seen the ocean despite living only a few miles away and were in awe of the sights and sounds of their day at the beach. NOAA NMFS, NWS , and NOS marine sancturaries offices participated as well as many partners.

This is one of the largest voluntary federal employee sponsored environmental stewardship events in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The Maryland event was held at the Jug Bay component of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

NOAA partnered with Washington Sea Grant and the University of Washington Joint Institute for the Study of Atmosphere and Oceans to host the fifth annual NOAA Science Camp in Seattle. During the week-long camp, 53 middle-school-aged campers worked on a hypothetical fish kill in the Puget Sound. In August the Castle Rock fire surrounding the mountain resort town of Ketchum burned over 48,000 acres. After the fire was contained the threat of flash flood and debris flows took center stage. The booth was a big hit, especially on the morning of the 25th as occasional rain showers plagued the opening of the show, and the active radar display kept all aware of current conditions. Skies cleared, as forecast and the Navy's Blue Angels put on an awesome display.
