World Prodigy Grounding - Quahog Spawner Sanctuary
Three 100-acre quahog spawner sanctuaries were established through the late 1990's -2000 in Narragansett Bay, RI to compensate for losses from the World Prodigy oil spill. Local shellfishermen were used to transplant the quahogs, Mercenaria mercenaria from polluted waters into clean spawning areas. Approximately 350,000 pounds of quahogs were successfully transplanted into the three sanctuaries.
