A young western Pacific gray whale breaching off the coast of Sakhalin Island. Gray whales are divided into two populations: a western population which summers in Russia and winters in China: and an eastern population that summers in Alaska and winters in Baja California. Note the extensive scarring or "rake marks" from killer whale teeth.
