NOAA Photo Library Image - expl8165

Two large squid attempting to mate in the Gulf of Mexico. The male squid is upside down on top of the female, holding her just behind the fin. The white structure is the end of the male reproductive tract which he is using to implant sperm packages in the female. Oddly, where he is implanting his spermatophores is nowhere near where the eggs come out. Pholidoteuthis adami.
