Raft-culture of oysters, used widely in Japan, is under study by Woods Hole
Laboratory. The biologist is holding a string of bay scallop shells used to
collect oyster spat. The string of shells will then be hung beneath a raft
where the spat will grow to adult, commercial-size oysters.
