NOAA Photo Library Image - fizh1400

Alewives in Burnham Harbor. Although the photo is undated, it is probable that these dead alewife were part of the great alewife die-off of June, 1967. Rapid temperature changes encountered by the fish in lake waters, a fungus, and blue-green algae were all listed as possible causes of the die-off but no one cause was singled out.
