Alaska looking for a telegraph route across North America and then across
Siberia to Europe. Successful laying of the Trans-Atlantic Cable put an end to
this endeavor. Dall went on to an illustrious career with the the Coast and
Geodetic Survey, the Smithsonian, and the U. S. Geological Survey.
