George D. Wise, Assistant in the Coast Survey, joined Army Quartermaster Corps,
initially responsible for supplying Union Army and Navy on the Mississippi. Rose
to become head of all Army Quartermaster marine supply units and directed the
activities of approximately 400 supply ships and troop transports by the close
of the war. Brevetted a Brigadier General for his services.
