Alexander Dallas Bache, Second and arguably greatest of the Superintendents of
the Coast Survey. He expanded the operations of the Survey to cover the whole
U.S. coastline, began geophysical operations in the Coast Survey, was a founder
and first president of the National Academy of Sciences, and made the Coast
Survey a strong arm of Union mapping and intelligence during the Civil War.
