Figure 13. Bouquet de la Grye sounder, invented by the French hydrographic
engineer Anatole Bouquet de la Grye in 1869. The main point about this device
was a new type of weight release mechanism, based on the action of spring
released at the moment that the weight contacted the bottom. This method was
used extensively on cable survey ships.
