Figure 14. Baillie sounder, a version of the Hydra sounder, was designed in
1871 by Lieutenant Charles W. Baillie, RN, when he was on the North American
station. This instrument was almost immediately adopted by the British Hydrogra
phic Office. Two of these instruments were placed on the CHALLENGER in 1873 and
used successfully.
