Figure 39. Massey sounder, a propeller driven sounding device first developed
in 1802 by Edward Massey. Many improvements were made to this device through
the Nineteenth Century. The instrument in the image was created by Thomas Walke
r in 1874. It consists of a propeller driven registering device which is fixed
to a sounding line and weighted by ballast.
