Figure 40. Aime's mechanism devised by Georges Aime in 1841 for triggering the
release of water sampling bottles. Although the records of Aime's tests of this
mechanism are not available, it seems that by using this mechanism that he was
the first to take a series of water samples from bottles strung on the same
cable at a number of different levels within the water column.
