in 1838. Aime designed a prismatic lead tube supported by wood and provided
with a filtering mechanism at its base that attenuated wave motion. A wood
float connected to a counterweight by a silk cord, indicated the level of the
sea on a reverse graduated scale which was calibrated on a calm day.
