This device was used by William Dittmar, then professor at Anderson's College in Glasgow for analyzing sea water collected by the CHALLENGER expedition. This instrument is a variant of the apparatus designed by Alexander Classen and used by Hercules Tornoe on the Norwegian North Atlantic Expedition.
