The
Caribbean Sea - images of swashbuckling pirates and
gold-laden Spanish galleons on the Spanish Main. The Caribbean Sea –
home of hurricanes, explosive volcanoes, and the occasional earthquake
– but also the home of beautiful coral reefs. Up until about 50
years ago
coral reefs were geographic features to avoid with razor-sharp appendages
ready to rip the bottom out of unwary ships and boats that sailed into
harm’s way. But then, the miracle of snorkeling and scuba-diving
brought these gems of the sea into the collective consciousness of the
world. Join the NOAA Photo Library in exploring some of these beautiful
reefs of the Caribbean and learn why we should work towards preserving
them for posterity…
